"How Deep Will It Go?"
The Million Dollar Question everyone wants to know.

The truth is there are many things that can effect depth
1) Size of the object
a: of course a smashed can will be picked up by the
         detector deeper than a dime
2) Conductivity of the metal
a: generally speaking metals that have higher
conductivity such as copper or silver will be
picked up at greater depths than metals of a
         lower conductivity such as Gold
3) How long the object has been in the ground
    ( halo effect )
a: what happens here is the metal deteriorates over
time and leaches out into the ground making the
object appear larger than it is
4)  Ground Mineralization
( how much iron is naturally in the soil )
a: ground that has a very high iron content is more
difficult for the signal to penetrate
b: this can be overcome to some extent by multi-
         frequency or pulse induction detectors
5) Operating Frequency of the Metal Detector
a: this mainly depends on what you are looking for
b: most Gold seeking machines are of a higher
frequency than standard detectors. Or are Pulse
        Induction type

We have conducted our own air tests on the machines we stock and sell. Unless otherwise noted the tests were done in "out of the box" setting with no "tweaking" of the machines. Results will no doubt vary because of many factors. Some of which are listed above. The depth listed below in inches, is for a repeatable tone ( sound ) sweeping both ways with the detector. The Target ID numbers or VDI may be off.
The test Targets were : a U.S. Large Cent (copper, 1 1/8in or 2.9 cm diameter) A Flat Button w/shank (brass, about 3/4in or 1.8cm diameter), a U.S  Silver half dime (silver, 5/8in or 1.5 cm diameter), and a Flat Button w/o shank (metal unknown, 0.43in or 1.1cm diameter) very thin.

The link above is not our information. We do wish to thank those who put their time and effort into testing all of these different machines.

The link above is a on going testing of all brands of detectors in various situations. Click the link and then click detector tests at the directory. There are a total of 4 tests at the bottom of the page. The first two pages are more or less complete but the last 2 are still being worked on.

Now, the E-Trac is not yet on the test site, but it would have at least the same or more depth as the Explorer SE listed in the tests. We have done our own tests at the shop and in the field and conclude that it is the best overall Detector for both Depth and Target ID.
